Work inspired and made for Harumi. For her, about her and with all her identities and cultures combined.
I tried to capture how Harumi feels. Living in the Netherlands as a Mexican with japanese heritage is freeing to her. Not being the only Asian looking one anymore, like in Mexico, but just another foreigner in the mixed crowds of the Netherlands. And not being the strange one in Japan, where she looks like them but doesn’t know al the etiquettes and words. And now to commemorate her third nationality, so to speak, I made this piece for her. She has got only a Dutch passport now, but is still very much rooted in the other countries of her culture and heritage. With this piece I wanted to show her she has a home in three places in the world and let her know she is appreciated by people that love her in all three places. To be one whole human being with a strong connection to three completely different countries is a beautiful thing.
Just like her.
