Celebration, 2023

Celebration is a piece about celebrating community and the joyful feeling that making art together evokes.

This work is made of handmade bits and pieces of my 14 birthday guests. I decided to teach all my friends different yarn techniques in one afternoon as a way to celebrate my birthday. So afterwards I would have all the handmade pieces and I would be able to play and combine everything to make a colorful artwork. It worked! I call it Celebration for the obvious reason of it being made in a birthday gathering, but also to celebrate the wholesome feeling of a community making something together. I am glad my own community of friends now got a chance to experience this feeling as well. So shout out for everyone who participated in this piece: thanks Bruno, Dymphy, Erik, Esther, Harumi, Helene, Jacqueline, LJ, Lynn, Loek, Lieke, my mom, Nine and Yumi.

Used needlework techniques: hand spool knitting, finger knitting, crochet, braiding, knotting and smyrna.
